    Welcome

    Welcome Interim Superintendent              Eric Hoppes

Having the freedom of choice is an amazing American value.  We have so many choices before us and mostly we choose well.  I would like to encourage you to spend time with your kids reaffirming your family and our community values.  This, so they can make choices that align with their values.  Choices that will point them toward success and away from many of the pitfalls that plague our society.

I have a favorite coach of all time. John Wooden Basketball coach of UCLA who won 10 NCAA titles.  And I really like this quote of his about choice.  “There is a choice you have to make in everything you do.  So, keep in mind that in the end, the choice you make, makes you.”

At my previous school, we had a weekly assembly.  At the end of each assembly, I would say to the students, “When you make good choices…” And they would say back to me, “Good things happen.”  I am a firm believer in this simple principle.

I also believe that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.  Our children are the most important people to us.  Let us all be aware of the example we set and how we can help them make good choices in life.

    District Overview

Gravenstein Union School District is a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with an enrollment of approximately 750 students. The district is located in the southeast rural section of Sebastopol in West Sonoma County.  Approximately 65% of the students attending our schools live outside of the original district boundaries. There are four schools in the district. Gravenstein School is a K-5 charter school with the exception of some first grade classes (called Gravenstein First School). Hillcrest Middle School is a 6th - 8th grade middle school which is a charter school, and the district also has a Community Day School. The district has a K-8 Magnet/GATE Program at both campuses (ENRICH!). The sites reflect the rural nature of the community. The relatively small enrollment at each site, excellent staff and very involved parents have worked together to establish a student body that has achieved some of the highest California state test scores in Sonoma County for the last 15 years.
